This Crumbling Pageant The Fury Triad Book 1 eBook Patricia Burroughs
This book is a riveting, amazing read, and the only regret I have is that I found it before the last two books were out, because I am now feeling a bit unmoored. It was that good. The twists are amazing, the Fury family is wonderful, the writing is _so_ good--I really cannot recommend this book highly enough for fans of alternative history/magic/dual realities/fantasy. It is a unique and wonderful world full of gods and goddesses and curses and shadows and unknown magic. And music. Lovely, fantastic music.Added October 4, 2015
I've decided that since the second book, The Dead Shall Live, is coming out December 28th, I should write a review that's actually a little longer. I should also add that I have the kindle edition, then bought the paperback because I liked it so much I wanted a paper copy.
This is an incredibly detailed, intricate tale centering around Persephone Fury, taking place in an alternate Regency England. Some families have magic, others don't. The Fury family is especially gifted, except for Persephone. Or so they think. The people in her family are fully drawn out individuals who make you feel like you really have just stepped into their house and their fantastical wondrous world of magic and music.
But the boys in the family have had a mysterious tutor, one whom Persephone is sure is up to no good, and one night she switches places with her twin when the tutor comes to take him out for the night...
It's the beginning of what will be, for Persephone, the first of many defining moments of her life. Who is good, who is evil. And, as is so often true, sometimes it's hard to tell which is which. Her decisions have consequences that seem truly dreadful. Maybe they are. I don't know so can't even be spoilery about it. Sigh. I am so glad it's only a few more months until the second book!
This Crumbling Pageant is a thick book, but I read it in just a couple of sittings; it is riveting. The characters are fascinating, the story is convoluted--in a good way. There are mysteries, worrisome characters, and then characters that are even more worrisome. The Fury family is lovely--I ended up caring about them deeply by the time I'd finished.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. There are many fantasies out there, but I found it unique, with a wonderful narrative style, fantastic world building, and really excellent characters. There are lots of surprises and twists, and I didn't find it predictable, which I really liked as well.

This Crumbling Pageant The Fury Triad Book 1 eBook Patricia Burroughs Reviews
I’m not sure what I think about this book, but since overall it intrigued me enough to buy the next book in the series, I’m erring on the side of the higher rating. Interesting world building and characters. But the way information is shared with the reader about the world and characters sometimes made motivations and the plot confusing. I understand that the main character is often confused and misled as she grows. She doesn’t know everything and so I get while the reader doesn’t. But because of that, I found some of her choices and their consequences hard to understand. But I’m intrigued enough to keep reading.
It might be my fault that this start of this book never really solidified for me, I was reading it in bits and pieces in between other books, but because the world, mythos (I kept mistaking Earthborn for Ordinary and wasn't quite sure what the King was the King of, and didn't know until fairly far on that the main character's brother didn't have magic, etc) didn't provide a solid background for me, I felt like I was constantly trying to parse the poetic and sometimes too-formal dialogue and wording of sentences to figure out what was happening.
Instead of just enjoying the overall overdramatic flavor of the book.
And when Vespasian Jones, the rebel leader is first introduced, he comes across as an unfeeling, vindictive, arrogant man....but the book is giving you clues that this will be an important person in the heroine's life other than just her nemesis.....and that got all confused.
I kept waiting for either his POV to sound less arrogant and mean or for the plot to allow some breathing room between Vespasian's needs for magic and rebel plans and the heroine's existence.
In this book it didn't really happen, so I was left with the heroine's love for her baronet Robin which made all kinds of sense, but I couldn't emotionally invest myself in because of the whole Vespasian Jones-heroine dynamic which was tons more interesting and a richer mine of emotional angst.
Anyway, I got ahead of myself a little here. Persephone Fury is from a rich family lineage of magical nobles who coexist separately within our "Ordinary" world. And here's where things got a bit iffy for me, I couldn't tell if it was a different dimension, or hidden within ours, or what relation the Earthborn were to the Fireborn until the end when someone conveniently makes it clear that "Earthborn" were the native Celtic magic people and the "Fireborn" were the invading Roman magic people. The Earthborn are in rebellion against hte Fireborn, but there's an Arthuresque prophecy about a True King muddying up the waters, as well as the fact that Persephone herself, while magically powerful, has some kind of darkness in her that is connected to the Earthborn.
And then there's the dire, dire consequences people face from going against the faux-celtic god's wishes....
So it was enjoyable, and most likely fantasy lovers in the Guy Gavriel Kay and Juliet Marillier will enjoy this one, the ending (a slight cliffhanger) made me so upset for the main characters that I'm not sure I can continue on with the series. Too much emotional putting through the wringer and blind pride and arrogance and misunderstood concern.
The version was $0.99 when I bought it on , and for that price, I would say its totally worth checking out if you like Roman-Celtic-esque flavored fantasy.
This book is a riveting, amazing read, and the only regret I have is that I found it before the last two books were out, because I am now feeling a bit unmoored. It was that good.
